Chapter 5

"I'm doing this for you, baby," Nikki stated as she leaned across the seat of their yellow Lotus Elise and gave him a quick kiss.

"Doing this for you," Grant corrected, kissing her back and then with a wave of his hand motioning for her to get out of the vehicle.

"Yeah." She rolled her eyes at him and exited the car. Grant watched as she strolled down the walkway towards Dr Greer's office. Once she disappeared into the building, he made his way to the other side of the building and parked the car.

After he parked the car, he shut it off and got out. Quickly locking it, he made his way into the agency. He caught his reflection in the mirror. Black suit, tie, mirrored sunglasses. The stereotypical CIA agent if he'd ever seen one.

"Living the dream," he muttered under his breath as he walked into the front doors and flashed his ID to the guard and then slid his security badge into the secured door. The door made a soft buzz and he pulled it open and stepped into the building.

Removing his glasses he started to make his way through the maze of cubicles towards his nook when he heard his name being called. Spinning around he frowned seeing his boss, a tall, thick man of his early fifties rushing towards him.

"I need to see you in my office, immediately."

"Alright," he murmured and followed Agent Blare into his office.

Agent Blare motioned for him to take a seat, and then walked around the desk and settled himself behind it. Grabbing the first of two file folders that sat in front of him on his desk he shuffled through the papers while Grant waited to find out the reason why he'd been brought there.

Finding the right paper in the file, Agent Blare took a moment to skim through it and then set it down on his desk. Leaning back in his chair he steeped his fingers under his chin and eyed Grant for a long moment. "You put the request in to return to field duty."

Grant nodded and a surge of guilt rushed through him as thoughts of Nikki came to the forefront of his mind. "Yeah."

"I'm... delighted to hear it. We need people like you, but here's the problem. Dr Greer has recommended against it."

While a part of Grant was angry at Dr Greer interfering, the other part of him was slightly relieved. He wouldn't have to lie to Nikki or see the reaction on her face when he told her that he'd changed his mind and that he couldn't handle being cooped up in the office all day every day.

"Now, I know your speciality is with weapons, but an issue has come up that is in need of a seasoned agent of you," he cleared his throat, "expertise."

"But... Dr Greer."

Agent Blake leaned forward and braced his elbows on the table before him. "Off the record... Fuck, Dr Greer." Grabbing the second file folder in front of him he pushed it across the desk for Grant.
